The Story of Scarlett Irene Murray

The Story of Scarlett Irene Murray is my debut novel. It marks a departure from the historical and genealogical themes many readers associate with my work, yet remains rooted in the immigrant experience and the excitement of beginning a new life. Like my heroine's world, the novel draws inspiration from a pivotal year in my own life, when I moved from Paris, France, to Atlanta, Georgia, in 1984. Set in Atlanta that same year, the story captures the spirit of a city where possibilities seemed endless and the future full of promise. Opportunity drew newcomers from across the country and from abroad. They arrived with ambition, energy, and dreams in a city famously described as “too busy to hate.”

My Life from a Window Seat

I turned 75 this year, spent 31 years in the airline industry, mostly promoting IT services around the world. Along the way I met airline and government excutives from 98 countries, living under all sorts of political regimes, from the most liberal to the most restrictive. I kept my opinions to myself, while on the ground. When airborne, seated in a comfortable window seat at 30,000 feet my mind wandered... maybe under mild hypoxia and effects of excellent wines. I penned it all down. Went even as a far back as my early childhood in Italy, growing up in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, working in Paris, France before settling in the United States, not without some turns and adventures. I made it!

Escape from Luxembourg

The book documents how the Grand Duchy served as a refuge for Jews fleeing Nazi persecution in the years preceding World War II. The fate of over 800 jews is explored. The flight of the Grand Ducal family and Luxembourg’s government in exile as well as the Sousa settlement in the Dominican Republic is documented.

About the author

September 11, 2001, turned out to be a pivotal date in many people’s lives, including mine. After 31 years in the airline industry, I had come to believe deeply that airlines and their airplanes were a force for good—bearers of good tidings in a world too often marked by division and crisis.

When I left the airline business behind, I dedicated my life to research, teaching, and publishing. My books move between genres much as I move between languages: with curiosity, with care, and with the belief that every story, told honestly, has something to say to everyone.
